Overview
Germany National (D) Student Visa
The National (D) Student Visa is the primary route for international students enrolling in a full-time degree program at a German university, including many public institutions that charge low or no tuition fees. Applicants must first secure university admission, then apply for the visa through the German consulate in Pakistan, and — after arriving in Germany — convert it into a residence permit for study purposes with the local immigration office.
A defining part of the German process is proof of financial resources, typically demonstrated through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or an equivalent formal financing proof, showing you have sufficient funds to cover a year of living costs at a time. Applicants also need valid health insurance and, for certain preparatory pathways, may need to attend a Studienkolleg before starting their main degree. Once in Germany, students generally have defined part-time work rights during their studies, and many graduates become eligible for an 18-month job-seeker residence permit after completing their degree.
