Overview

South Korea D-2 Student Visa

The D-2 Student Visa is South Korea’s primary visa for international students enrolling in a full degree program — bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, or exchange programs — at an accredited Korean university. It’s distinct from the D-4 visa, which covers standalone Korean-language training rather than a full degree. Applicants must first secure an official acceptance letter from their institution before applying for the visa at the Korean embassy or consulate.
Beyond admission, applicants generally need to show proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living costs, and — depending on whether the program is taught in Korean or English — may need to demonstrate Korean or English language proficiency. After arriving in Korea, D-2 visa holders must apply for an Alien Registration Card (ARC) within a set period, which serves as their primary form of ID during their studies. Students wanting to work part-time generally need separate permission from immigration authorities, often tied to a minimum Korean language level, and many graduates become eligible for South Korea’s D-10 job-seeking visa after completing their degree.
