Australia Subclass 189
The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa is a permanent residency visa — unlike the Subclass 407 and 482, it doesn’t require an employer sponsor, a family sponsor, or a state or territory nomination. Instead, eligible applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Australia’s SkillSelect system and are invited to apply based on a points-tested assessment of their age, English language ability, skilled work experience, and qualifications.
Because it grants permanent residency from the outset, the Subclass 189 gives holders the right to live and work anywhere in Australia indefinitely, access to Medicare, and — after meeting residency requirements — eligibility to apply for Australian citizenship. It’s generally considered one of the most independent and flexible skilled migration pathways available.

Requirements of the Subclass 189 Visa
The Subclass 189 is a points-tested, invitation-only visa. To qualify, applicants generally need to show:
- A nominated occupation on Australia’s relevant skilled occupation list
- A positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for that occupation
- A competitive score on Australia’s points test (covering age, English ability, skilled employment, education, and other factors)
- Submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and receipt of an invitation to apply
- Under the maximum eligible age limit at the time of invitation
- Competent or higher English language proficiency
- A clean legal, health, and character record
